Check your filters first. The Y-strainers on the inlet side of the proportioner frequently catch debris that can restrict flow. If the filters look clean, inspect the gun screens. A clogged gun screen restricts material flow at the very end of the line, causing pressure to spike on that specific side.

Proportioner Pump Malfunctions

The proportioner pump powers your rig. If the pump fails to stroke or strokes unevenly, your entire operation stops. Leaking seals are a primary culprit here. When pump seals wear out, material bypasses the piston and prevents the pump from building the necessary pressure. When this happens, you will usually see material weeping around the pump shaft.

Another common pump issue arises from poor lubrication. Keep the ISO pump shaft lubricated to prevent the isocyanate from crystallizing and damaging the seals. Remember to check your lube cup levels daily.

Dealing With Generator Power Fluctuations

Your spray rig needs consistent power. When a generator surges or drops voltage, it can trip breakers on your proportioner or compressor. Dirty fuel filters or old spark plugs often cause the generator to run roughly. Maintain the generator engine as carefully as you maintain the spray equipment itself.

Check the voltage output at the breaker panel. If the voltage drops too low when the load kicks in, your equipment will shut down to protect its electronics.
