How to Seal Your Home for Hurricane Preparedness:
Before you begin, always wear protective gear, including respirators, gloves, and goggles. Make sure to vacuum and clean out all cracks and gaps to ensure a good seal. This step is crucial for maximizing the effectiveness of the foam.
Prep the Gaps and Cracks:
- Temperature Check: Ensure that the can foam is at room temperature (ideally between 70°F and 100°F). If it’s too cold, the foam may not expand properly.
- Shake the Can: Shake the can thoroughly for about 30 seconds to mix the contents well. This ensures a consistent foam application.
- Test Spray: Before applying, test the foam on a scrap piece of material to check the flow and consistency.
- Tape It Off: Use waterproof contractor painter’s tape to outline the gaps and cracks, applying three layers of overlapping tape but remember: the tape is just for prepping and overspray and should NOT be placed where you intend to seal. This helps create a cleaner finish and makes for easier removal once the weather has passed. If you skip the tape, don’t worry! The foam can still be removed with a bit of elbow grease and a scraper.
Apply the Spray Foam:
- Go around to the prepped spots with your can foam or larger kit, focusing on windows, doors, and other areas where air and water could seep in.
Let it Dry:
- Allow the foam to dry completely. This step is crucial for ensuring a solid seal.
Optional Extra Protection:
- Once the foam is dry, you can apply a clear flex sealant over the foam for added waterproofing. However, the foam itself should suffice for most situations.
