Consistent equipment performance begins with a dependable routine. Many contractors rely on daily startup and shutdown procedures for foam rigs to confirm that equipment is operating correctly before work starts and to leave everything ready for the next day. Start With a Thorough Startup Inspection

Before powering the rig, walk around the trailer or truck. Look for anything that could interfere with safe operation. Hose routes should remain clear, materials should be secured, and ventilation should be adequate for the work ahead.

Once inside the rig, verify that the A-side and B-side materials are connected properly. Check material levels as well, so the crew knows there is enough product available for the day’s planned production. Finding a problem during inspection is far preferable to discovering it after the system is heated and pressurized.

Verify Power, Air, Heat, and Pressure

After the inspection is complete, move on to the rig’s support systems. Confirm that the generator is functioning properly and that the compressor is supplying air as expected.  Clean, dry air remains essential throughout the application process.

With power and air systems verified, allow the proportioner, heated hose, and materials to reach the recommended operating temperatures. This stage requires patience! Even when equipment displays indicate that target temperatures have been reached, the entire system may need additional time to stabilize.

Proper material temperature directly impacts spray performance. Allowing the system to fully condition before spraying often leads to more predictable results and smoother operation at the gun.

Follow Proper Shutdown Procedures Every Day

The workday should end with the same level of attention given to the startup. A thorough shutdown routine protects equipment and reduces the likelihood of problems during the next startup.

After spraying, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for pressure relief and equipment shutdown. Clean the spray gun according to the recommended procedure and inspect components that may require maintenance or service.

Take time to organize hoses and secure equipment before leaving the jobsite. A clean, orderly rig is easier to inspect the following morning and helps crews avoid unnecessary delays.
