At Spray Foam Systems, we know how frustrating it can be when your proportioner throws a code and disrupts your workflow. If you’re experiencing issues related to Thermocouples (T/C) or Temperature Sensing Units (TSU), here are some expert troubleshooting tips to get you back up and running quickly.
Understanding Thermocouples (T/C) and Temperature Sensing Units (TSU)
Thermocouples (T/C) and Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD) are often confused, but they function differently:
- Thermocouples (T/C): Use the junction of two dissimilar metals to generate a millivolt current, which is read to determine temperature.
- Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD): Use resistance changes in a circuit to measure temperature with high accuracy.
Graco thermocouple connectors use three wires, the Nitrosys+ system uses only two wires
- Thermocouple Wire (Type E):
- Red insulated wire: Negative
- Purple insulated wire: Positive
- Bare wire: Shield wire
- RTD Wire Configuration:
- Two red insulated wires: Negative (used for a reference loop to ensure accuracy)
- White insulated wire: Positive
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide
This troubleshooting technique is universal, but keep in mind that error codes may differ depending on the manufacturer and model of your equipment.
- Inspect T/C Cables for Damage:
- Standard SPF industry T/C cables typically use a 3-pin connector.
- Check for continuity:
- Test pin 1 on the male connector to pin 1 on the female connector.
- Repeat for pin 2.
- If there is no continuity, the wire or connection is damaged and should be replaced.
- Check the TSU Connection:
- If the cables test fine but you still get an error code, try plugging the TSU directly into the front of the proportioner.
- If the code disappears, the issue likely lies in the cable rather than the TSU.
- Secure Your Connections:
- Loose connectors can cause intermittent issues. Use electrical tape to secure them in place and prevent unexpected disconnections.
